I’m 17, I love babysitting, I want my future career to involve children, I really want to be a Nanny for the summer, I don’t know if I should though.. I would be leaving my friends for the entire summer, I would be giving up softball and my job for the entire summer, but I’ve always wanted the experience to be a Nanny, I would love to be a Nanny in New York.. I’ve always wanted to travel there! What do you think I should do!?
edit: to one of the answers…im SEVENTEEN therr are enough girls in my HIGHSCHOOL pregnant i don’t want to start thinking about a family till after college..

to another: i want to nanny now and get the experience because i don’t want to do it next year and miss all my friends grad parties and everything.. and i don’t want to miss out on a year of college and plan to have my own family and liife after college..

i really want to do it because i really want to get away from my home.. i neeed a full time summer job so i can pay for college.. i want to go out of state because i honestly hate where i am from.. :(

Thanks for considering contributing a small donation to cover expenses to provide free nanny info and the server!

You don’t want to be a nanny, you want to be a mother. Keep your job and look into starting a family. Trust me you’ll be the happiest person in the world.

As a 17 year old you probably wont get a job working as a NY nanny. NY nannies are often in their 20’s or older, have much experience and education with children. The parents need to trust the person that the person they are leaving their child with for the entire day has the knowledge and experience to handle anything. Also , most want full-time, long-term nannies and wont hire you just for the summer.
As a 17 year old, live it up – play softball and hang out with your friends. work as a sitter on the weekends. Nannying is a fun job, but wait a while before considering making it your full-time commitment

I’ll warn you now that nanny is a pleasant word that means “under paid servant”. If you were in NYC you’d could be working for some snobby family who doesn’t want to deal with the kids. Your contract may say 40 hours, but its not like you can just up and leave after your shift if the parents are no where in sight.

Unless you are homeless and desperate I would never, ever, for any amount of money, suggest anyone be a live-in nanny. Since nanny is home its “okay” if mom runs out for some quick groceries once they are asleep. Since nanny is home its okay if the parents suddenly decide they want to go out tonight. Since nanny is home nanny can be taken advantage of.

Who knows, some people do have a pleasant experience… after all, some former nannies grow up to need a nanny of their own… and I am sure they at least try to treat their nanny like half of a person.

I think its a great idea! When i was 17 i nannied in New Zealand, it was a great life experience. I would definitely encourage you to look into something like that. My friend did a nanny job in england and also loved the experience. I now nanny in my hometown, which might be a better idea for you at the moment. You wont have to give up your friends or softball. :)

Being a nanny is quite a task to take on and i recommend takng as many early childhood courses in high school as possible. Families seeking nannies search for people who seem dedicated and eager to learn as much about children as possible. Also, if you happen to discuss with a family your desire to become their nanny, let them know of the courses you are taking and will be taking. Do some research and find a local community college offering these courses. Ask lots of questions of how you can learn more and gain experience

I understand how you feel. If I were your age, I would do it on a heartbeat! I would love to live in NY for the summer (I hate where I live too). I am now married with 2 kids so I no longer have that option.

Here is a website about nannying in NY (they even have an application to apply as a nanny):

I hope this helps.

Good luck and have fun!

Did you just see The Nanny Diaries or something? Wealthy families in NYC do not hire 17y.o. high school students as nannies! I’m sure there’s lots of families in your city that will be looking for a nanny for the summer. I think it’s highly unlikely that a family would hire you as a live-in nanny because you’re under-age. And most nanny jobs are 8am-5pm, so you would still have your evenings and weekends to hang out with your friends, play softball ect.
